Fashiona on 2008 Fashion~Part 4~Best Trends of the Year

In today’s final nod to 2008, Fashiona will recap the year’s best trends.

Only the frivolous fashion industry would attempt to dress up anyone and everything. While Fashiona shakes her head in disgust frowns upon doggie bikinis, she loves the new trend in teeny laptops with Vivienne Tam leading the way.10-23-08-hp_tam_netbook.jpg

When gladiator shoes were first seen in 2007; it took off last year and their popularity took Fashiona by surprise. The look is growing on her especially the heels and is part of a larger trend: the focus on legs.  These lovelies are part of Christian Dior’s Fall collection.

Hemlines are getting shorter and is helping Fashiona renew her acquaintance  with the Thighmaster.  Here is Gwyneth wearing two trends: the super high heels (7 inch” Giuseppe Zanotti’s)  and a black mini-dress.

Last but certainly not least is one not related to fashion: Political Awareness.  Americans came out in record numbers to vote in this year’s Presidential election and as a result Barack Obama is take the oath on January 20. Fashiona hopes that more people stay involved in the process.  Fashiona’s motto: No vote, No complaint.

What will The Obamas wear Inaugural Day?

Fashiona has made no secret that she LOVES  the  Obamas.  Both Barack and Michelle are extremely intelligent, poised and look so  very striking as a couple.

Top designers all over the world are sketching and submitting their ideas for the Obamas to wear for the oh so prestigious Inaugural day and evening festivities.

Michelle’s  evening dress choice  is a well kept secret…if she has even made it yet.

Fashiona’s favorite choices  are these:

What will Mr. President-elect wear during the swearing in? He has already decided to wear an union made Chicago based Hart Schaffner Marx tuxedo for the ball.

Brian Lane, brian.jpeg   a menswear designer for Brooks Brothers drew this ensemble and it made the front cover of Women’s Wear Daily.

In the fashion world that is HUGE - Kudos to you Brian…whether Obama wears it or not.

NY Fashion Week begins

So NY Fashion Week officially began yesterday.

Fashiona is covering Cho Cheng on  Wednesday, the invite is lovely… not the cheap print out at home variety.  Just who is Cho Cheng?

He  was recently named one the top 5 Chinese designers by Modern Weekly.  Cheng joined the ranks of Derek Lem, Peter Som, Alexander Wang and Phillip Lam.  More on Wednesday after Fashiona sees the show.

Think fashion week is just about ladies fashion…

No,  menswear is covered as well.  In fact men typically replenish their wardrobe every 3 years or so.  That could explain despite the sagging economy, menswear  sales are increasing.

Even Barack Obama believes in quality upgrade. The  suit that he wore during his landmark speech at the Democratic Convention- NEW.  Last week he purchased the custom order navy cashmere/merino blend suit from Hart Schaffner and Max.

Bonus- Fashiona will visit the tents tomorrow to cover as much as she can, camera and pen hand… and yes wearing heels.

Fashiona on Political Fashion - You knew it was coming!

Fashiona has been chomping at the bit to critique the political candidates this year, but in all fairness, she wanted to wait until after BOTH conventions wrapped up.

And with both sides confirmed and running mates in place… get ready:

Fashiona’s political  views aside… in the style game Democrats win.

Let’s start with the Republicans:

John McCain is just plain  stiff - looking and acting.   His clothes are as conservative as his views. His gold/mustard tie is as risky as he gets… in fashion anyway.

Sarah Palin was a beauty queen and still is a very striking woman.  The glasses do help add a serious tone to her look…nice frames.  Her French roll is also a good look and not to overdone.  She seems to be  working hard to  overcome her former beauty queen image.  Fashiona likes the cut of the her suit, black is great.  However  it looks too evening wear looking … brings back the whole pageant thing (especially with the wave).

Cindy McCain (top)… Stepford wife (below)…moving on.

Democrats:

Joe Biden looks every bit the part of the statesman that he is.  Age appropriate and never trying to hard.

Barack Obama has the perfectly tailored suits , handmade shirts, foward ties…amazingly never looks rumpled. Never really seen his shoes but Fashiona would put money on that they are as together as the rest of him.  He  has perfected the no-tie-look in more casual settings.

Michelle and her favorite designer, Maria Pinto are a match made in fashion heaven.  Michelle knows what works for her and more importantly what she likes.
