Fashiona will be first to tell you that she is not a reality TV fan…she has written about this before. However there is a show that she will DVR: Harlem Heights. It is fitting that the show comes in the Year of the Ox.
Why this show…she was at a recent taping and quite impressed. Great clothes -check, well done make up - check and thankfully, no- wanna -be -baby- mamas -of -rich-athletes in sight. These 20 somethings are smart, ambitious and about making their dreams happen through old-fashion hard work and the art of networking.
Each Harlem Heights episode will document the lives and dreams of eight 20-somethings. The cast consists of the ex-girlfriend of an international music star; a budding lifestyle editor for a magazine; a struggling actress; a young man with a troubled family; a young father who is a native to Harlem; the hard-partying son of a prominent Harlem political leader; an aspiring lawyer with big ambitions; and a driven fashionista.
Harlem Heights premiers on March 2 on at BET 10 pm/ ET. Starting in February in honor of Black History Month, BET.com will have more details.

The nation’s new sweethearts Malia and little ham Sasha had their first day at the prestigious Sidwell Friends. The media from CNN to NBC was out and about to record the last hugs and kisses by their parents and then trailed their motorcade to their respective campuses. By all accounts their first day was a rousing success.
Next up the ongoing question: Who will the Obama ladies wear for their big day?
In December, seasoned designers sent their ideas into the Washington Post and the Women’s Wear Daily. It is only fitting that student designers have their say too. Fashiona thanks her Mom for tipping her off to this story from USA Today. Fashion students from Marymount University in Arlington, VA sent in their sketches. Click here to see their submissions and Tim Gunn’s sometimes snarky comments.
On the professional side, Diane von Furstenberg’s elegant white dress would accent Michelle’s rich coloring.
and Oscar de la Renta’s trifecta is just hard to resist:

One two three…awwwwwwwwww!!

In today’s final nod to 2008, Fashiona will recap the year’s best trends.
Only the frivolous fashion industry would attempt to dress up anyone and everything. While Fashiona shakes her head in disgust frowns upon doggie bikinis, she loves the new trend in teeny laptops with Vivienne Tam leading the way.
When gladiator shoes were first seen in 2007; it took off last year and their popularity took Fashiona by surprise. The look is growing on her especially the heels and is part of a larger trend: the focus on legs. These lovelies are part of Christian Dior’s Fall collection.

Hemlines are getting shorter and is helping Fashiona renew her acquaintance with the Thighmaster. Here is Gwyneth wearing two trends: the super high heels (7 inch” Giuseppe Zanotti’s) and a black mini-dress.

Last but certainly not least is one not related to fashion: Political Awareness. Americans came out in record numbers to vote in this year’s Presidential election and as a result Barack Obama is take the oath on January 20. Fashiona hopes that more people stay involved in the process. Fashiona’s motto: No vote, No complaint.

Dec 31 is here finally…and it is New Year’s Eve and New York is ready to party.
The mercury took a little dip yesterday so Fashiona’s teeny dress original outfit won’t work with the wind chill. So she is going with a outfit equally cute but with little more fabric and works better with mile high boots. It always pays to have a plan B in most situations, fashion and otherwise.
2008 was a year of extremes, fashionable Barack Obama won the White House by a landslide and Wall Street fell apart. The economy is lifeless but women are keeping their chins up and their feet in 5 inch heels. Designers are struggling to stay afloat but still churning out opulent styles.
Fitzgerald’s Great Gatsby satirized the immoral filthy rich in the 1920’s. His theory was money can and will corrupt purest of people. Perhaps so but the late Paul Newman was wealthy, handsome and a superb actor but he will be remembered as much for his movie roles as for his philanthropic work.
Fashiona has every intention of being wealthy one day…sooner than later but promises to use her power for good.
So Ciao to 2008 and Happy Birthday Topaz!!!
