The State of Marriage

Starter marriages are nothing new…starlets and leading men have getting married multiple times since Hollywood began.

Elizabeth Taylor may be one of the most famous of the Serial Married Club… but she had plenty of company.  Charlie Chaplin was married several times himself. One of his most notorious marriages was  to the popular child-actress, Mildred Harris

It seems with the latest drama splashed over the tabloids between thrice married Jennifer Lopez and her latest sperm donor husband Marc Anthony, she might be ready for husband 4. She has not been wearing her ring as of late.

Fashiona just finished Diahann Carroll’s latest book, The Legs are the last to go, a great gift idea for a  girly  book lover.  Diahann candidly discusses her 4 marriages and 2 broken engagements and her infamous affair with Sidney Poitier.  She has finally, in her golden years, mastered the art of living alone and spending quality time with her only daughter and their two children.  She freely admits the tug of war she felt with her burgeoning career and trying to maintain her personal relationships.  Many women regardless of their lot in life feel this tug all the time.

Fashiona herself LOVES weddings and went to two this  year.  When she isn’t  watching CNN, she watches all the wedding shows on WE from Bridezilla to Whose Wedding is it Anyway? She loves to critique the planning, the venue, the ring,

the dress…everything related to the day. As much as she loves being the voyeur and cherishes the weddings that she has attended…she completely understands the wedding is just the beginning-the marriage is the real test.

Fashiona always gets extra sentimental about weddings and marriage on Dec 23 because it is when her parents got married.  As you are reading this, they are enjoying their 36th anniversary at a lovely romantic spot.  Their wedding was lovely and intimate affair  and Mom designed her own dress.

36 years later, they are each other’s best friend and worst critic and their love for each other has been unfailing through some very trying times.   When Sis and Fashiona  were little, they used to cringe when their lovebird parents  would show affection in front of them. Of course now, they  understand that was just one of many lessons they were learning.

Fashiona has always believed that she will get married once and only once…some day and she is very blessed to have a great example of what a REAL  marriage is  at home.

Fashiona, you rang the chapel bell of truth with this post.
With all these reality shows like the ‘Bachelor’ , ‘ Who wants to Marry a Millionaire’….etc. Who is taking marriage seriously these days.

Guess who knows half of the secret? Oprah and Stedman.

Happy Christmas and a Happy New Year. In an attempt to spread the Christmas cheer I am reading and commenting on as many blog posts as I can in 24 hours. I hope you have a lovely Christmas. A really interesting blog. I have been married for nearly 6 years now and still in love more so now than I ever was. My parents have been married for 36 years. Marriage can and does last unfortunately not as much as it used to do. Great blog.
