Lipstick Jungle vs. Sex in the City in Fashiona’s eyes

Fashiona was chatting a few days  ago with a friend(who wants to stay nameless) about  why she prefers Lipstick Jungle to Sex in the City.  True, both books and subsequent TV series were written by the same author; Candace Bushnell.  There are similarities: a loyal group of friends, great clothes and to die for shoes…

But it is funny, Fashiona never really watched  Sex in the City  the series for  the clothes.  She was much  more drawn in by the drama between  Carrie and Big…and the fierce shoe game. She is STILL in fact   saving for her first pair of Manolos.

Patricia Field , in Fashiona’s opinion,  went over the top with clothes purposely to show off New York and the girls’ fabulous yet angst filled lives.  Carrie was clearly the “dresser” of the show, she followed and set trends religiously.  It was  as if Carrie dressed to “cover” up the rest of her messy life.

Now Fashiona’s personal taste leans more toward to Charlotte’s,  classic with some bohemian twists.  When  SITC movie  was released this summer, Fashiona appreciated the clothes much more because the girls had finally evolved into women and their clothes reflected  the fragile stability that  they  finally achieved.

Fashiona likes Lipstick Jungle in part because she can relate to the show more.  This trio acts more like ladies and in fact are a bit  little older than the Sex in the City quartet.  They are Alpha women with high paying and high profile jobs and… can better afford their wardrobe(always a mystery in SITC).  Each character has her own distinct style and ways of expressing herself which clearly comes across in their personality and clothing choices. They also are struggling with balance between work, personal and family life.  The Lipstick Jungle ladies are more confident in themselves and don’t “try” nearly as hard.

Fashiona’s favorite character is Nico.  Nico, played by Kim Raver always carries herself with class but is seriously struggling with her need for passion vs. security.  Now that her deceitful husband has passed, Nico has to face that question in the form of cute  man-child Kirby… all while wearing great shoes. Fashiona just happened to see Kim Raver film  one of the opening sequences where  she is wearing  these leopard shoes - not that this has any bearing on why Nico is her favorite character.

BTW- Fashiona has already ordered Candace Bushnell’s latest book One Fifth Avenue.

I relate to Charlotte’s style more too. Actually, back in the day my friends would always do the “who are you?” game for the show. They always said Charlotte for me. She is more ladylike and proper in her life and style. And, so am I.

I like Lipstick Jungle a lot too. I think I like it more because I can watch it with my mom or grandma in the room without turning shades or pink. And, like you said, they are more approachable as women.

    Good post!

I like Lipstick Jungle way more than I liked Sex in the City. For me, Lipstick Jungle shows characters that any woman can aspire to be. Powerful and she’s on her game. Just overall more believable.
